Plesiotexanites was named by Matsumoto (1970).

It was reranked as Texanites (Plesiotexanites) by Kennedy et al. (1973) and Kennedy and Cobban (1991).

It was assigned to Texanitinae by Klinger and Kennedy (1980) and Riccardi (1981); and to Texanites by Kennedy et al. (1973) and Kennedy and Cobban (1991).
