Asymptoceras was named by Ryckholt (1852) [Sepkoski's age data: C Tour-u C Vise-u Sepkoski's reference number: 2,524].

It was assigned to Aipoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964) and Shimanskiy (1967); and to Nautilida by Sepkoski (2002).
