Squalodon peregrinus was named by Dal Piaz (1971) [Species is assigned to Dal Piaz, not Dal Piaz and Piccoli.]. Its type specimen is GIUP 26130, a skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Libano, which is in an Aquitanian marine sandstone in the Libano Sandstone Formation of Italy.
