Dioctria was named by Meigen (1803). It is extant. It is the type genus of Dioctriinae, Dioctriini.
It was assigned to Dasypogoninae by James (1939), Hull (1962); to Asilidae by Aldrich (1905), Lewis (1972), Carpenter (1992); and to Dioctriini by Dikow (2009).
