Taxonomy
Gonionotites was named by Gemmellaro (1904) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Carn-u Tr Nori-l Sepkoski's reference number: 302]. Its type is Gonionotites italicus.

It was reranked as Juvavites (Gonionotites) by McLearn (1947).

It was assigned to Juvavites by McLearn (1947); to Haloritidae by Smith (1927) and Spath (1951); to Juvavitinae by Tozer (1981); to Juvavitidae by Tozer (1994); and to Ceratitida by Sepkoski (2002).
