Fungi was named by Jahn and Jahn (1959) [authorship not certain to Blackwell]. It is extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Eukarya by Margulis (1996); it was reranked as the subkingdom Fungi by Blackwell (2004); it was reranked as the unranked clade Fungi by Adl et al. (2005).

It was assigned to Eucarya by Woese et al. (1990); to Eukaryota by Blackwell (2004); to Eukaryota by Taylor et al. (2008); and to Opisthokonta by Adl et al. (2005) and Ruggiero et al. (2015).
