Parapuzosia was named by Nowak (1913) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno-l K Camp-u Sepkoski's reference number: 730]. Its type is Sonneratia daubreei.

It was reranked as Puzosia (Parapuzosia) by Anderson (1958).

It was assigned to Puzosia by Anderson (1958); to Desmoceratidae by Thomel (1988); to Puzosiinae by Clark (1960), Summesberger (1979), Wright and Kennedy (1984), Kennedy (1993), Kennedy (1995) and Kennedy and Kaplan (1995); and to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002).
