Strix flammea was named by Pontoppidan (1763). It is extant.
It was recombined as Tyto flammea by Hay (1930); it was recombined as Asio flammeus by Schultz and Howard (1935), Wetmore (1940), Miller and DeMay (1942), Wetmore (1956), Rudenko (1960), Olson and James (1982), Weesie (1988), Burchak-Abramovich and Burchak (1998), Broughton (2004), Zelenkov et al. (2008), Adams and Woods (2016), Clements et al. (2017), Carrera et al. (2018).
