Astarte was named by Sowerby (1816) [Sepkoski's age data: J Hett R]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Astartinae.

It was assigned to Bivalvia by Conrad (1862); to Astartinae by Vokes (1980), Dockery (1982), Gliozzi and Malatesta (1983) and Ward (1992); to Astartidae by Packard (1922), Popenoe (1937), Vokes (1981), Ward and Blackwelder (1987) and Wienrich (1999); and to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002).
