Petigurus inexpectatus was named by Fortey and Droser (1996) [Paratypes: cranidium, USNM 481319; librigena, USNM 481320; pygidium, USNM 481322]. Its type specimen is USNM 481321, a pygidium, and it is a 3D body fossil.
