Archeolimulus was named by Chlupáč (1963) [Sepkoski's age data: O m]. It is not extant. Its type is Archeolimulus hanusi. It is the type genus of Archeolimulidae.

It was assigned to Archeolimulidae by Bergström (1975); and to Xiphosurida by Sepkoski (2002).
