Palmula was named by Lea (1833) [Sepkoski's age data: T Dani T Mi-m]. Its type is Palmula quadratus.

It was assigned to Foraminiferida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Vaginulinidae by Kiessling (2003) and Albright et al. (2007).
