Hypermecaspis was named by Harrington and Leanza (1957) [Sepkoski's age data: O Trem-u O Aren-u Sepkoski's reference number: 378,795]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Hypermecaspididae by Harrington and Leanza (1957); to Olenidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Ptychopariida by Sepkoski (2002).
