Cyrtometopus was named by Angelin (1854) [Sepkoski's age data: O l]. It is not extant.

It was reranked as Cheirurus (Cyrtometopus) by Reed (1906).

It was assigned to Cheirurus by Reed (1906); to Phacopida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cheiruridae by Harrington and Leanza (1957) and Jell and Adrain (2003).
