Concavus was named by Newman (1982) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 347]. Its type is Balanus concavus. It is the type genus of Concavinae.

It was assigned to Balaninae by Zullo (1984); to Cirripedia by Sepkoski (2002); and to Concavinae by Zullo (1992), Chan et al. (2021).
