Copytus was named by Skogsberg (1939) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-u R]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Neocytherideidae by Blaszyk (1987) and Ayress (1995); to Podocopida by Sepkoski (2002); to Neocytherideinae by Ceolin et al. (2015); and to Krithinae by Ceolin et al. (2024).
