Megophryinae was named by Nobel (1931). It is extant.

It was reranked as the family Megophryidae by Frank and Ramus (1996), Henrici and Haynes (2006), Henrici (2009) and Chen et al. (2016).

It was assigned to Anura by Frank and Ramus (1996); to Pelobatidae by McGrew et al. (1959) and Sanchiz (1998); and to Pelobatoidea by Henrici and Haynes (2006), Henrici (2009) and Chen et al. (2016).
