Polygraphus was named by Erichson (1836). It is extant. It is the type genus of Polygraphini.

It was assigned to Hylurgidae by Scudder (1893); to Scolytinae by Cong et al. (1996); and to Polygraphini by Wood and Bright (1992) and Bouchard et al. (2011).
