Chaperia was named by Jullien (1881) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-u R]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Chaperiidae.

It was assigned to Cheilostomata by Sepkoski (2002); and to Chaperiidae by Brown (1952), Bassler (1953), Brown (1956), Brown (1958), Pouyet (2000) and Bock (2006).
