Taxonomy
Mendacella was named by Cooper (1930) [Sepkoski's age data: O Cara-u S Wenl-l Sepkoski's reference number: 1,538,1066]. Its type is Orthis aequivalva.

It was assigned to Rhipidomellidae by Villas and Cocks (1996); to Orthida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Rhipidomellinae by Hints (1975), Isaacson et al. (1976), Williams et al. (2000), Rubel (2011) and Hints (2012).
