Spondylis was named by Fabricius (1775). It is extant. It is the type genus of Spondylii, Spondylidini.

It was assigned to Eleuterata by Fabricius (1775); to Coleoptera by Latreille (1796); to Prionii by Latreille (1802); to Spondylididae by Wickham (1917); and to Spondylidini by Bouchard et al. (2011).
