Crania abnormis was named by Defrance and Hoeninghaus (1828).
It was recombined as Ancistrocrania abnormis by Lee and Brunton (1986), Bitner (1990), Bitner and Dulai (2004), García Ramos (2005) and Bertolaso et al. (2009).
