Hemitoechia was named by Nikiforova (1970). Its type is Hemitoechia distincta. It is the type genus of Hemitoechiinae.
It was assigned to Trigonirhynchiidae by Rubel and Rozman (1977); to Rostricellulinae by Jin and Chatterton (1997); to Hemitoechiinae by Williams et al. (2002); and to Rhynchonellida by Sepkoski (2002).
