Taxonomy
Hirsutella was named by Cooper and Muir-Wood (1951) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Anis-l Tr Ladi Sepkoski's reference number: 1,538]. Its type is Spirifer hirsutus. It is the type genus of Hirsutellinae.

It was assigned to Spiriferida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Hirsutellinae by Williams et al. (2006).
