Taxonomy
Whitfieldella was named by Hall and Clarke (1893). Its type is Atrypa nitida. It is the type genus of Whitfieldellinae.
It was assigned to Hyattidininae by Sheehan (1977); to Hindellinae by Bassett and Cocks (1974) and Jin and Chatterton (1997); to Whitfieldellinae by Williams et al. (2002); and to Spiriferida by Sepkoski (2002).
