Hyperoblastus was named by Fay (1961) [Sepkoski's age data: D Emsi D Fras-l Sepkoski's reference number: 904]. It is not extant. Its type is Hyperoblastus emuhaensis. It is the type genus of Hyperoblastidae.
It was assigned to Phaenoschismatidae by Fay and Wanner (1967); to Hyperoblastidae by Waters and Horowitz (1993); and to Spiraculata by Sepkoski (2002).
