Hyperoblastus was named by Fay (1961) [Sepkoski's age data: D Emsi D Fras-l Sepkoski's reference number: 904]. It is not extant. Its type is Pentremitidea filosa. It is the type genus of Hyperoblastinae, Hyperoblastidae.
It was assigned to Phaenoschismatidae by Fay and Wanner (1967); to Hyperoblastinae by Waters and Horowitz (1993); to Spiraculata by Sepkoski (2002); and to Hyperoblastidae by Bohatý et al. (2024).
