Mimema punctatum was named by Handlirsch (1906). It is an impression. Its type locality is Sevenhampton, Gloucestershire (Brodie Coll.), which is in a Bathonian marine limestone in the Great Oolite Formation of the United Kingdom. It is the type species of Mimema, Mimemala.
It was recombined as Mimemala punctatum by Strand (1936).
