Taxonomy
Ammonites obscurus was named by Schluter (1872). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Coesfeld-Stockum (Schlüter collection), which is in a Campanian marine sandstone in the Dülmener Schichten Formation of Germany.

It was recombined as Tetragonites obscurus by Kennedy and Kaplan (1995).
