Protremaster was named by Smith and Tranter (1985) [Sepkoski's age data: J Sine]. It is not extant. Its type is Protremaster universalis. It was considered monophyletic by Smith and Tranter (1985) and Gale (2018).

It was assigned to Tremasterinae by Smith and Tranter (1985); to Valvatida by Sepkoski (2002); to Korethrasteridae by Gale (2011); and to Korethrasteridae by Gale (2018).
