Zabrus was named by Clairville (1806). It is extant. It is the type genus of Zabrides, Zabrina.

It was assigned to Carabiques by Dejean (1821); to Zabrini by Tamutis et al. (2011); and to Zabrina by Bouchard et al. (2011).
