Taxonomy
Cypraea (Luponia) leptorhyncha was named by McCoy (1877) [Lectotype designated by Darragh 2002.]. Its type specimen is P12133, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is PL3078 - Shore platform at Fossil Beach, 3 km South of Mornington, which is in a Miocene marine claystone/marl in the Fyansford Formation of Australia.

It was recombined as Cypraea leptorhyncha by Tate (1890); it was recombined as Rhynchocypraea leptorhyncha by Cossmann (1898) and Lorenz (1989); it was recombined as Gisortia leptorhyncha by Vredenburg (1927); it was recombined as Umbilia (Rhynchocypraea) leptorhyncha by Schilder (1935); it was recombined as Umbilia (Umbilia) leptorhyncha by Darragh (2002).
