Taxonomy
Helicampodus was named by Branson (1935) [Sepkoski's age data: P Guad-u Tr Indu]. It is the type genus of Helicampodontidae.

It was assigned to Helicoprionidae by Obruchev (1965); to Eugeneodontida by Sepkoski (2002); to Edestidae by Zangerl (1981), Ginter et al. (2010); and to Helicampodontidae by Itano and Lebedev (2023).
