Gigantopterus was named by Abel (1906) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Carn Sepkoski's reference number: 863]. Its type is Gigantopterus telleri.

It was assigned to Perleidiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Thoracopteridae by Griffith (1977), Shen and Arratia (2022).
