Eclipes was named by Jordan and Gilbert (1919) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-u Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Brotulidae by Jordan and Gilbert (1920); to Gadiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Gadidae by Jordan (1925), David (1943), David (1956) and Fierstine et al. (2012).
