Acanthopygaeus was named by Leriche (1906) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m-l T Ol-l Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Perciformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Siganidae by Carnevale et al. (2014) and Bannikov (2014).
