Apsilus was named by Cuvier and Valenciennes (1830) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 560]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Apsilinae.

It was assigned to Apsilinae by Allen (1985); and to Perciformes by Sepkoski (2002).
