Polysternon was named by Portis (1882). It is not extant.
It was assigned to Pelomedusidae by Carroll (1988); to Panpodocnemidae by Cadena et al. (2012); to Bothremydidae by Tong and Gaffney (2000), de la Fuente et al. (2014); and to Foxemydina by Gaffney et al. (2006), Marmi et al. (2012), Pérez-García (2016).
