Nanhsiungchelys was named by Yeh (1966). Its type is Nanhsiungchelys wuchingensis.
It was assigned to Chelonia by Carroll (1988); to Trionychia by Joyce et al. (2004); and to Nanhsiungchelyidae by Yeh (1966), Sukhanov (2000), Sukhanov et al. (2008), Brinkman et al. (2008), Danilov et al. (2013), Tong and Li (2018), Ke et al. (2023), Ke et al. (2025).
It was assigned to Chelonia by Carroll (1988); to Trionychia by Joyce et al. (2004); and to Nanhsiungchelyidae by Yeh (1966), Sukhanov (2000), Sukhanov et al. (2008), Brinkman et al. (2008), Danilov et al. (2013), Tong and Li (2018), Ke et al. (2023), Ke et al. (2025).
