Taxonomy
Mimeosaurus was named by Gilmore (1943). It is not extant. Its type is Mimeosaurus crassus.
It was assigned to Chamaeleonidae by Gilmore (1943); to Priscagamidae by Alifanov (1989) and Alifanov (1993); to Agamidae by Estes (1983), Carroll (1988) and Gao and Hou (1996); to Mimeosaurini by Alifanov (1996); to Hoplocercidae by Alifanov (2000); and to Priscagaminae by Borsuk-Bialynicka and Moody (1984), Gao and Hou (1995) and Gao and Norell (2000).
