Taxonomy
Postosuchus was named by Chatterjee (1985). It is not extant. Its type is Postosuchus kirkpatricki. It was considered monophyletic by Nesbitt (2011).

It was assigned to Pseudosuchia by Gauthier et al. (1989); to Poposauridae by Carroll (1988) and Parrish (1993); to Paracrocodyliformes by Weinbaum and Hungerbühler (2007); to Rauisuchidae by Long and Murry (1995), Irmis (2005) and Peyer et al. (2008); to Rauisuchidae by Nesbitt (2011); and to Paracrocodylomorpha by Weinbaum (2011).
