Ranella mathewsonii was named by Gabb (1866). Its type specimen is lost and is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Bursa mathewsonii by Clark (1918); it was recombined as Mediargo mathewsonii by Terry (1968); it was recombined as Mediargo mathewsoni by Addicott (1970).
