Taxonomy
Edaphosaurus was named by Cope (1882). Its type is Edaphosaurus pogonias. It is the type genus of Edaphosauridae.
It was assigned to Clepsydropidae by Cope (1888), Hay (1902); to Edaphosauria by Olson (1966); and to Edaphosauridae by Cope (1882), Case (1907), Hay (1930), Romer (1936), Romer and Price (1940), Peabody (1957), Daly (1973), Reisz (1986), Carroll (1988), Spindler et al. (2019).
It was assigned to Clepsydropidae by Cope (1888), Hay (1902); to Edaphosauria by Olson (1966); and to Edaphosauridae by Cope (1882), Case (1907), Hay (1930), Romer (1936), Romer and Price (1940), Peabody (1957), Daly (1973), Reisz (1986), Carroll (1988), Spindler et al. (2019).
