Dimacrodon was named by Olson and Beerbower (1953). It is not extant. Its type is Dimacrodon hottoni. It is the type genus of Dimacrodontidae.
It was assigned to Dimacrodontidae by Olson and Beerbower (1953), Olson (1962); and to Tapinocephalia by Carroll (1988).
