Taxonomy

Zaglossus was named by Gill (1877). It is extant. Its type is Zaglossus bruijnii.

It was assigned to Monotremata by Glauert (1914); and to Tachyglossidae by Murray (1978), Carroll (1988), Griffiths et al. (1991), Flannery and Groves (1998), Wilson and Reeder (2005), Rowe et al. (2008).

Synonyms

Proechidna was named by Gervais (1877). It is extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Zaglossus by Glauert (1914), Wilson and Reeder (2005), Augee et al. (2006).

It was assigned to Echidnidae by Lydekker (1894).
Echidna oweni was named by Kreft (1868). Its type specimen is Australian Museum, Sydney, a limb element (humerus), and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Echidna (Proechidna) oweni by Dun (1894); it was recombined as Zaglossus oweni by Allen (1912); it was considered a nomen vanum by Murray (1978).
Acanthoglossus was named by Gervais (1877). It is extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Zaglossus by Glauert (1914), Flannery and Groves (1998), Augee et al. (2006).
Prozaglossus was named by Kerbert (1912). It is extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Zaglossus by Flannery and Groves (1998).
Bruynia was named by Dubois (1881) [also said to be 1882]. It is extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Zaglossus by Glauert (1914), Flannery and Groves (1998), Augee et al. (2006).
