Ectocentrocristus was named by Rigby and Wolberg (1987). It is not extant. Its type is Ectocentrocristus foxi.
It was assigned to Didelphidae by Rigby and Wolberg (1987); to Polydolopiformes by Case et al. (2004); to Polydolopimorphia by Goin et al. (2006); to Marsupialia by Beck et al. (2008); to Herpetotheriidae by Williamson et al. (2012); and to Hatcheriformes by Carneiro and Oliveira (2017).
