Propliopithecus was named by Schlosser (1911) [also attributed to Schlosser 1910]. It is not extant. Its type is Propliopithecus haeckeli.
It was assigned to Hominoidea by Simons (1965); to Propliopithecidae by Simons et al. (1987); to Pliopithecidae by McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Propliopithecoidea by Zalmout et al. (2010).
