Prolimnocyon was named by Matthew and Granger (1915). It is not extant. It was considered paraphyletic by Peigné et al. (2007).
It was synonymized subjectively with Prototomus by McKenna (1960).
It was assigned to Limnocyonini by Van Valen (1967); to Limnocyonidae by Matthew and Granger (1915), Van Valen (1966), Bown (1979), Gingerich and Deutsch (1989), Gunnell (1998); to Hyaenodontidae by Rose et al. (2012); and to Limnocyoninae by Morlo and Gunnell (2005), Peigné et al. (2007), Solé (2013), Borths et al. (2016).
It was synonymized subjectively with Prototomus by McKenna (1960).
