Gabelia was named by Rigby and Murphy (1983) [Sepkoski's age data: S Wenl-u D Fame Sepkoski's reference number: 232,1066]. It is not extant. Its type is Gabelia pedunculus.

It was assigned to Protospongiidae by Rigby and Murphy (1983); and to Reticulosa by Sepkoski (2002).
