Phenacodontidae was named by Cope (1881). It is not extant. Its type is Phenacodus.
It was assigned to Condylarthra by Hay (1902) and Gregory (1910); to Condylarthri by Jaekel (1911); to Condylarthra by Cope (1889), Flower and Lydekker (1891), Ameghino (1897) and Chow et al. (1977); to Phenacodonta by Archibald (1998) and Thewissen et al. (2001); and to Condylarthra by Carroll (1988) and Rose et al. (2012).
