Taxonomy
Leptauchenia (Sespia) was named by Stock (1930) [named as subgenus of Leptauchenia by Stock 1930a; transferred to Cyclopidius by Schlaikjer 1935, Thorpe 1937]. It is the type subgenus of Sespiini.
It was reranked as Sespia by Schultz and Falkenbach (1968), McKenna and Bell (1997), Lander (1998), Hoffman and Prothero (2004), Stevens and Stevens (2007).

J. M. Hoffman and D. R. Prothero 2004 | Small-sized leptauchenines with extremely hypsod-ont cheek teeth. Because of their smaller size relative to Leptauchenia,they also have a smaller facial vacuity, a shallower malar, and a smallertympanic bulla. The paroccipital process, however, is more inflatedthan in Leptauchenia. The styles on M1-3 and the ribs and stylids onm1-3 are much less prominent than in Leptauchenia. M3 is lost inmany specimens. |
